McAteer opens up on Nunez’s improvement during Liverpool’s preseason

Jason McAteer told LFCTV Darwin Nunez has already made great strides at Liverpool pre-season after scoring four goals in a wonderful second half against RB Leipzig on Thursday night.

Nunez, 23, came on as a half-time substitute against Leipzig and took the game by the neck. He starred and received a 10 in our player ratings. In just five minutes, the Uruguay international scored two goals and finished the game with four.

Nunez opened the scoring after Luis Diaz won a penalty and Nunez scored his second with a beautiful finish after Liverpool recovered the ball high up the pitch. A third was a clean finish from a Harvey Elliott cross before four came late.

It comes after initially struggling against Manchester United before improving in the clash with Crystal Palace. But against Leipzig, Nunez gave fans a taste of why he was signed. McAteer compared him to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“For a striker he needs goals” McAteer said as a pundit after the game on LFCTV. “He’s not a defender, he’s a midfielder. You need goals. Against Manchester United he ran around – burned up all the oxygen in two minutes.

“He never recovered. He was better against Palace. But the goals came and tonight he was excellent. He’s an absolute striker. I see shades of [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic in him, shades of [Ian] Rush.”

McAteer: Nunez made great strides at Liverpool in the pre-season

What a performance by Nunez. The Uruguayan entered the game with Liverpool just 1-0 up thanks to Mo Salah’s early opener. But wow what a performance and what an immediate impact on Thursday night.

His predatory instinct was excellent. But it was also his running without the ball, his follow-up game. Nunez looked much more in control and played with more freedom. It could have been five but for a brilliant save from a header.
