Ally McCoist has slammed Rangers star Kemar Roofe during Celtic’s win at Ibrox as the forward was repeatedly caught offside by the Hoops defense on Sunday. An example later left McCoist upset with the Rangers star.
Celtic have moved six points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table after an Old Firm win over the Gers in which the Hoops largely dominated. Aaron Ramsey put Rangers ahead but Celtic came back.
Tom Rogic and Cameron Carter-Vickers scored the goals as Celtic won 2-1. Rangers missed striker Alfredo Morelos, who suffered a stroke while on international duty for Colombia. Kemar Roofe started in front.
The ex-Leeds striker looked a bit sluggish, his best chance came in the second half – he got the right side from Carl Starfelt but he volleyed wide. He was caught offside in the 94th minute and McCoist hammered the Rangers star.
“I have no idea why he’s sidelined. Absolutely no idea. You just don’t have to, look along the line. Absolutely no idea,” McCoist said while co-commenting on Sky Sports during Sunday afternoon’s title showdown.
McCoist on Roofe: Rangers star looked rusty, Gers missed Morelos
Roofe joined Rangers for £3.5m (Times) and while stats suggest he’s repaid some of that number – 30 goals in 67 games – he’s yet to fully convince Rangers’ support. In fact, Morelos is easily first choice.
What Morelos is doing is filling both centre-backs. It leaves gaps for Ryan Kent, Ramsey, and Joe Aribo to exploit. But the Celtic duo dominated Roofe, allowing the Celtic defense to gobble down Rangers midfielders as well.
Roofe can do better, but injuries and a lack of momentum this season have hampered his progress. Maybe no excuse for being offside against him in stoppage time.
