Melbourne Cup: Gold Trip owner roasts Karl Stefanovic for Logie’s incident

Karl Stefanovic, who hosted the Today show while drunk the morning after the Logies in 2009, is considered an iconic moment in Australian cultural history.

And the Channel Nine presenter was reminded of the memorable slip during an interview with Jamie Lovett, the owner of Melbourne Cup-winning horse Gold Trip, on Wednesday morning.

Stefanovic, 48, asked Lovett how he was feeling the day after his big win.

“We’re now joined – after a night of drinking, I assume – by Melbourne owner Jamie Lovett. Good morning How are you feeling, Tiger?’ he asked.

“Probably like you did that night after the Logies!” Lovett answered without missing a beat.

‘Okay, so good, huh?’ Stefanovic said before bursting into laughter.

Last September, Stefanovic revealed he was actually drunk — not just hungover — while appearing on a memorable episode of Today in 2009.

The longtime Today presenter, who appeared on The Hundred with Andy Lee, admitted he was still drunk when he showed up for work after the night of nights on TV.

He was handed a deck of cards with questions to ask the show’s panel of 100 everyday Australians.

“In 2009, after a night of drinking at the Logies, I reportedly showed up to work a little tipsy. Do you think less of me afterwards?’ he asked.

15 percent of people said yes, but comedian Tom Walker was quick to come to Stefanovic’s defense.

“There is nothing more appealing than doing a job badly. It’s good! Turning up hungover to do your job…” he argued.

Stefanovic was quick to correct the prankster, saying: “Just to give you one point, I wasn’t hung over. I was still drunk.’

On the now infamous Today show, Stefanovic saw his words slurred and laughing as his then-co-host Lisa Wilkinson attempted to regain control of the situation.

He later apologized for his controversial appearance and admitted he wasn’t “at his best” after a night out at the Logies.

“I think the first thing I have to say is yeah it was a very big Logies night, probably too big,” he later said on air.

“When I woke up the next morning I didn’t feel drunk or I wouldn’t have gone on the air. I like to think I’m professional enough to have made that decision.

“But it was clear from the vision I saw that I wasn’t at my best and what I want to do is apologize to everyone out there who might, um, you know, be hurt by my behavior on Monday morning were offended. So, humble apologies to you all.’
