A video on YouTube claims a mermaid has been spotted in Muizenberg, South Africa. It has more than 700,000 views on YouTube.

Not so, police there told Snopes.

Snopes also contacted the police. “Please note that Muizenberg SAPS has no reports of a mermaid washed up off the beach, nor reports of a child being bitten by a fish,” authorities there told Snopes, who “miscaptioned” the story. rated.

The mermaid story was also questioned in the comment thread of the YouTube video. “If this were real, it would be one of the greatest finds in history!! You would think that one or more in the crowd would realize the importance of this and call in the authorities to investigate,” one person wrote.

“A lot of people want to believe this is real… I want to believe people would have the compassion to put the creature back in the water,” wrote another.

“First of all, when did mermaids make pig noises? Second, a real mermaid’s body conforms to the fishtail part, they don’t wear a fish skirt. And if they actually found a mermaid and knew what it was, they should have known that she belongs in the water. Then why, instead of putting it back in the water, did they just keep poking at it?” wrote another person in the comment thread.

The mermaid video also made the rounds on Reddit.
