Paul Merson suggested The day star that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks should join Everton in the summer transfer window.
The former Arsenal star believes Winks could thrive away from Tottenham and thinks the £91,000-a-week (SalarySport) Midfielder could even be promoted to the England squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar if he does well for Everton.
Winks has won 10 caps for England in his career so far.
The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Everton in the summer transfer window.
Sky Sports has reported that Everton are interested in signing Winks from Tottenham and that manager Frank Lampard has given the Toffees the green light to open talks and put a deal in place.
Harry Winks urged leaving Tottenham for Everton
Merson wrote about Winks in The day star: “At Stanley Park I think Harry Winks will be a good player for Everton after being a bit of a scapegoat at Tottenham. I think he even has a secret chance of toppling England’s World Cup squad if he has an incredible start to the season.
“I think he’s a good footballer who never touched the green at Spurs. When Jose Mourinho was there, Winks was benched every time they lost. If Everton actually spend money on him rather than loaning him out, it will show the manager really wants him and the club really values him.
“You have more chances to play if a club buys you than if you were on loan. I think that’s a good move for him. I think he will come to himself. He’s a better player than people think. He could still play for England.
“We don’t have anyone who can keep the ball in midfield. That’s why he still has a chance for me to go to the World Cup. This kid keeps it simple and maintains ball possession and keeps it going.
“We will need that in Qatar. I think he tried too hard at Spurs. Trying to do something special to justify his place. But he’s at his best when he keeps it simple and gives you control in midfield.”
Spurs exit would make sense
In our view, it would make sense for Harry Winks to leave Tottenham Hotspur and join Everton in the summer transfer window.
The 26-year-old struggled for regular playing time at Tottenham last season and head coach Antonio Conte clearly doesn’t think he’s good enough to be a regular in his squad.
