Mexico’s President sparks a social media frenzy after posting a photo of an “elf”.

Mexico’s president sparked a social media frenzy over the weekend after sharing a photo of an “elf” allegedly perched in a tree.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador tweeted a photo of a mysterious-looking animal with glowing eyes on Saturday, along with a photo of sculptures from a Yucatec-Maya archaeological site.

“I’m sharing two photos from our monitoring of the Maya train work: one taken three days ago by an engineer, apparently from an Alux; another by Diego Prieto of a magnificent pre-Hispanic sculpture at Ek Balam. Everything is mystical,” he wrote.

An ‘Aluxe’ is a mythological forest spirit in Mayan culture, resembling an elf. The creatures are invisible, but according to lore they can become visible.

López Obrador, 69, who has more than nine million followers on the social media site, quickly caught the attention of users, who began mercilessly mocking him for his post.

The tweet was posted just before 6 p.m. Saturday night and was retweeted and liked more than 32,000 times.

The nocturnal photo of the “Elf” shows a tree with a branch forming what looks like a head of hair and what looks like glowing eyes.

The second photo shows sculptures that the President claims to have found in Ek Balam, Mexico, made by the Mayans hundreds of years ago.

According to Twitter, the photos posted by López Obrador have been viewed 4.4 million times by users.

These users have not been shy when it comes to interacting with the Mexican President’s tweets and claims.

Reactions ranged from astonishment to anger that López Obrador had so openly posted about a mythical creature and shared a story that was quickly debunked.

“President of Mexico Elf posting lolololol,” laughed one person.

“That’s honestly a credible XI, Mexican President. I’m on board,” said one user.

“It’s a raccoon with a bag on his head,” wrote another.

“What a normal President, how sane everything is, how up to date and no false information,” one person said in a translated tweet.

Many called the President and said he was completely lying about the story, citing articles that circulated two years ago with the image of the “Elf”.

“Yes, Andrés, an engineer took a photo three days ago that has been circulating in Nuevo León since February 2021 and in Thailand since December of the same year. You’re sad, very sad… and the country even more… If you believe it, you’re stupid… if you know you’re lying, you’re malicious…” said another user.

As for the mysterious figure, many have stated that they believe the “elf” is actually a gibbon or langur monkey, both of which resemble the tree figure.

“Pathetic…Mexican President who claims a picture of an Indonesian gibbon or langur taken 2 years ago is actually a gnome/wizard/magical creature from this week in the Yucatan. No wonder he’s zero,” one person wrote.

López Obrador has long held onto his love for indigenous cultures and beliefs. Engineers and workers are in the process of building a tourist train that is the president’s passion project in the Yucatan Peninsula.

The ancient Maya civilization reached its peak from 300 to 900 AD in the Yucatan Peninsula and adjacent parts of Central America.

Descendants of the Maya still live on the peninsula today.

Many also still speak the Mayan language and wear traditional clothing while preserving traditional foods, plants, religion and medicinal practices.
