When asked about the art of interviewing by hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley, Michael said, “It takes a lot of effort to be open in an interview, to get the questions right, and not to be picky about certain topics.

“You are aware of that as an interviewer. It’s a fascinating subject. There are a lot of other things that come into play.

He added, “I also enjoy watching interviews these days, especially when they don’t do it right.”

Michael was good friends with George Best and interviewed the footballer more than a dozen times during his career.

Mike recalled playing football with the Manchester United winger as a kid and his teachers didn’t believe him.

He said: “George was always coming down and trying to avoid dad because dad was trying to lecture him.

“He ran into the garden and played football with me and the two brothers and the game was to get the football best from George, which was impossible.

“I went back to primary school and they asked me what I do at the weekend and I said I played football with George Best.

‘He signed a football and wrote to Nurse Cross, he played football with George Best, George dear. I gave it to her at school the next day and I’m sure she blushed.”
