Midstate participates in MLK Day of Service

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Across the country, people will gather to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King, including the people here in Midstate.

This is the 14th year MLK Day of Service in Central Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, taking place at a new location – the Alexander Grass Campus for Jewish Life. The event commemorates the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington and focuses on King’s call to “realize the promises of democracy.”

“What we’re trying to do is give people the opportunity to volunteer for King’s Day,” said Mike Walsh, vice chair of the Central Pennsylvania MLK Day of Service.

With a focus on jobs, housing, literacy, and elections, Grass Campus for Jewish Life volunteers will build literacy kits, write birthday cards, and more.

Volunteers also help by putting together health and winter care kits to be distributed to community members.

“We will have individuals come and put these kits together. As you can see, there are socks, gloves, a blanket – just supplies that people affected by homelessness can take with them and who are willing to fight the cold,” said volunteer Dennise Hill.

The service event will take place on January 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is open to the public. There will also be an on-site job and housing fair during the event.
