Mieke Oort has been identified as the Massachusetts woman who was tracked down and killed while studying in the Netherlands. Dutch news site Boenniewus reported that police had referred to the suspect in Oort’s death, Thomas R., as a “jealous Tinder date”. He was arrested in Germany after fleeing the scene in a vehicle, according to the news site.

According to WCVB, Dutch authorities said two men, aged 25 and 30, were also injured in the attack that left Oort dead. Details of how they were injured were not immediately available. Police say the suspect started a fire at Oort’s apartment. The other two victims were Oort’s roommates, according to Boenniewus.

The Dutch news site reported that the suspect first threw an incendiary device into the apartment building, causing the fire. According to Boenniewus, police suspect he started a fire to lure occupants out of the building. He then attacked Oort and her roommate on a flight of stairs, police said. Oort was then stabbed to death with a sharp object, investigators said.

According to Boenniewus, Thomas R. worked as a service technician and lived with his parents and older sister. He lives in Leek, about 100 miles from Amsterdam. Further information, including his full name, was not immediately available.

Oort’s sister told WCVB her killer had tracked her down after they met on the Tinder dating app. He tracked her location with a GPS device on her bike, Danique Oort told the news station.

Danique Oort told WCVB: “He put a tracker on her bike because in the Netherlands you cycle everywhere. “Right now, we’re just trying to work through this whole situation and really say goodbye and make the necessary arrangements that we have to make.”

Oort’s ex-boyfriend, identified only as Michael, also a 21-year-old American studying in the Netherlands, told Hart Van Nederland they remained friends after the break-up and were considering dating back, which angered the murder suspect. “I don’t see this coming,” Michael told the news site. “I came straight here to see if it was really about her…obviously yes.”


Oort graduated from high school in Massachusetts and has been attending NHL Stenden College of Applied Sciences since 2020
