The Los Angeles Angels recalled outfielder Mike Trout from the injured list and used him as center fielder and No. 2 batsman Friday against the Detroit Tigers in his first game since July 12. For his part, Trout delivered an A ab hard-hit single in his second at-bat as part of a 1-on-4 effort with two strikeouts. The Angels still won in a 1-0 final (box score), with left Patrick Sandoval throwing his first career shutout.
Trout had been absent for more than a month due to a rare back condition. In a corresponding move, the Angels optioned outfielder Steven Duggar to triple-A.
Trout, now 31, hit .270/.368/.599 (169 OPS+) with 24 home runs over his first 79 games this season. His contributions earned him All-Star Game selection (in which he did not appear) and was worth an estimated 3.9 wins over the reserve, according to Baseball Reference calculations.
Trout was dealing with what the Angels coach described as “costovertebral dysfunction at T5.” It’s a condition he’s likely to grapple with for the rest of his career, although that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be limited in availability or performance.
It should be noted that Trout did not participate in a rehab assignment. Typically, players who miss more than a few weeks are sent to the minors to restore their rhythm through the use of low pressure replays in the game. Trout and the Angels clearly didn’t think it was necessary in this case.

The Angels began Friday night in Detroit with a three-game weekend series, the first step of a ten-game, three-city road trip. Trout’s next opportunity to play in front of his home crowd won’t come until Monday, August 29, when the Angels welcome the New York Yankees to town for a three-game set.
For his part, Duggar was released from waivers by the Texas Rangers earlier this month. In nine games with the Angels, he went 1:19 with a triple and 10 more strikeouts than walks.
