A 38-year-old Arizona man has been arrested after allegedly shooting his wife in her bedroom and stuffing her body in a closet while their four young children were in the home. Mohammad Alkurdi was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with first-degree murder, authorities said.
According to a press release from the Chandler Police Department, officers were responding to a report of a domestic violence-related shooting at an apartment complex on March 14.
Upon arriving at the scene, first responders said they found a male suspect – later identified as Alkurdi – with his four children, all under the age of nine, outside the home. Police say they immediately arrested Alkurdi, a Jordanian citizen, without incident.
“Officials found the children’s mother with an apparent gunshot wound at the family home,” the press release said. “Life saving measures were attempted but were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Police say the victim’s identity will not be released until authorities are able to notify her next of kin, some of whom live outside the country.
According to an affidavit from Phoenix CBS affiliate KPHO-TV, the first call to 911 was made by Alkurdi’s neighbor following a disturbing interaction with the alleged killer.
The neighbor reportedly told police that after hearing what sounded like a gunshot, he bumped into Alkurdi as he was leaving the family home. Alkurdi is reported to have told the neighbor in reference to his wife, “I shot her,” before walking away. One of Alkurdi’s sons then went to the neighbor and said his father had just shot his mother, KPHO reported.
Investigators at the scene reportedly recovered a firearm from Alkurdi’s home and noted in the affidavit that at least two shots were fired. His wife’s body was reportedly found in a closet in the master bedroom.
Police later learned that two days before the alleged murder, on March 12, Alkurdi bought the firearm that investigators believe was used in the shooting, according to KPHO. He reportedly bought the bullets on Tuesday, just hours before the shooting.
Alkurdi has reportedly had domestic violence problems in the past. Police said he threatened his wife with a knife on at least one occasion.
Alkurdi is currently only facing charges of lone murder, but police said they are still investigating his wife’s death and may also face child endangerment charges.
