This is the shocking moment when an Iraqi immigrant stabbed a university student to death because he wanted to be expelled from Britain.

Ellis Wheeler, 18, a Solent University student, was fighting for his life after Rebaz Mohammed, 28, attacked him as he was walking through Hoglands Park, Southampton, Hampshire, on his way back from the gym in December 2022.

Terrifying footage shows Mohammed pulling a kitchen knife from his coat before plunging onto the teenager’s back in broad daylight and puncturing his lung.

The Iraqi approaches the student just before the brutal attack, speaks to him briefly and asks him if he can kickbox before punching him.

Mr Wheeler was able to run away but passed out before being taken to hospital where he underwent surgery.

Mohammed, who entered the UK illegally on a small boat, was arrested at the scene and told police he had attacked his victim so he could be sent home to Iraq.

Mr Wheeler was walking through Hoglands Park, Southampton, Hampshire when he returned from the gym in December 2022 (Mohammed is pictured).

The 28-year-old, who had previously served a prison sentence, appeared at Southampton Crown Court after pleading guilty to aggravated assault and possession of a knife blade.

He was sentenced to six years in prison with an additional four years in prison after the “indiscriminate” attack in Hoglands Park last December.

The court heard how his victim, a Solent University freshman, missed his exams and is still struggling to sleep while wracked with anxiety.

The student escaped the attack but lost consciousness – with a “heroic” friend calling 999 and putting pressure on his horrific wound until police arrived.

He was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery for a collapsed lung and was kept under surveillance for five days.

Andrew Houston, prosecutor, said Mohammed knew he had to do something to be deported and had spoken to people who knew the immigration system.

He had previously been cautioned for criminal damage and assault and was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison in May 2022 for racially motivated harassment and stalking.

Richard Tutt, defending himself, said Mohammed, who was living in a hotel in Bournemouth, Dorset, “made every effort to be deported” but had no job and no money.

Mr Tutt said: “He believed after what he had been told he had to commit an offense of serious enough nature.

“He presents himself as a very naive person. He has experienced remorse, or at least sorrow.’

Judge Brian Forster KC convicted Mohammed and berated him for inflicting the horrific injuries “to further his own ends.”

He said: “If someone attacks with a knife, it’s coincidence.

“It was a random attack. Any member of our community could have been the victim.

“You were willing to inflict serious injury with a weapon to achieve your own goal. You could have killed the victim.”

The judge praised the victim’s friend, saying he “maybe saved.” [his] life’ and awarded him £250.
