Montreal Canadianiens G Carey Price to play on Friday against the New York Islanders after a long sabbatical

Montreal Canada goalkeeper Carey Price will start the game against the New York Islanders at Bell Center on Friday night, making her first appearance with the team since the 2021 Stanley Cup Final.

Canada’s interim coach, Martin St. Louis made the announcement after a training session with Price preparing as if he were the warm-up.

Price, 34, hasn’t appeared in an NHL game since July 7, when the Canadian team was eliminated in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup final against Tampa Bay Lightning.

The next several months were turbulent for Price. He had to have knee surgery this season. He waived his no-move clause to be left unprotected in the draft Seattle Kraken expansion – it was thought his big contract would prevent Seattle from picking him, and he was not accepted.

On October 7, Price voluntarily joined the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

“Over the past few years, I’ve let myself get to a place that’s too dark and I don’t have the tools to deal with that struggle,” Price wrote on Instagram last November. “I made the decision to be admitted to a residential substance abuse treatment facility. Things got to the point where I realized I needed to prioritize my health for both myself and my family. Ask for help. help when you need it is what we encourage our kids and that’s what I needed to do.”

Price returned to Canada in late 2021, but his road back from surgery was fraught with obstacles, including a non-COVID-related illness that kept him from taking action. However, earlier this month, Price began participating in all-team drills with Montreal, sparking speculation that he could return before the end of the regular season.

“It’s been a long, long road for him,” said friend and teammate Brendan Gallagher. “He’s very eager to get in there. It’s been a pleasure to see him on game day. It’s something he’s working extremely hard for. So in front of him we have to put in a real effort. well and hopefully win the hockey game.”

This is Price’s 15th NHL season. He has a career record of 360-257-79 in 707 games, all with Team Canada. Price won the Hart Trophy as the NHL MVP and the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top scorer in the 2014-15 season. The price is signed through the end of the 2025-26 season with an average annual contract value of $10.5 million.
