Mother with mental health issues found frozen to death with children

A Michigan The mother, who reportedly suffered from mental health issues, was found frozen with her two sons in a Pontiac park on Sunday afternoon after her surviving daughter asked a stranger for help.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the bodies of Monica Candy, 35, and her sons and Malik Milton, 3, Kyle Milton, 9, all succumbed to hypothermia, an autopsy showed.

Authorities were alerted to the tragedy by Cannady’s 10-year-old daughter, who knocked on a door and said her family was dead nearby. The daughter is currently in hospital in stable condition.

“This tragedy was based on a psychological crisis,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard said at a news conference on Monday.

After FOX2DetroitCannady reportedly believes someone tried to kill her, prompting her to flee her apartment last week when family members began noticing her paranoid behavior.

On Saturday, Cannady and her children were reportedly seen banging on doors and telling people they were hungry, but Cannady refused to take any money and continued to wander the area aimlessly.

Authorities say they’ve received multiple calls about underclothed family outdoors but haven’t found them

Sheriff Bouchard also noted that authorities had received several calls over the past few days about a family who – apparently underdressed – were out in the cold.

Officers eventually searched the area but did not find Cannady or her children.

FOX 2 Detroit reports that Cannady previously told her children to run and hide if anyone approaches them. Sheriff Bouchard said she told them to lie down on the ground and sleep before they froze to death.

“The girl who survived woke up. No one else has done that,” Bouchard said loudly WXYZ.

The local sheriff is asking for an increase in funding for mental health resources in the wake of the recent tragedy

Bouchard also called for an increase in funding for mental health resources.

“Mental health is one of the biggest challenges of this time,” he said.

“The state and federal government must provide us with funding that will allow us to offer more mental health services in partnership with the mental health community, including adding more psychiatrists to our team who will be part of a holistic response to calls in the area of mental health can be.”

The tragedy now leaves Cannady’s daughter orphaned and the sole survivor of the family. The children’s father, Kyle Milton, was reportedly murdered in 2021. The trial of his accused killer is already underway WXYZ.

Cannady was “a good mother” and “taught her babies,” says her shocked family

The family say Cannady was “a good mother and cared for her babies, which made last weekend’s tragedy even more confusing for her loved ones.

“She was a good mom. She took care of her babies. They were dressed warmly, they always wore appropriate clothes, their hair was done, they were clean,” Kyle Milton’s stepmother, Theresa Milton, told Cannady.

In fact, Milton said she was unaware of Cannady’s mental health issues, the outlet reports. Cannady’s brother, Andre Harsten, added that Cannady’s two boys were “amazing” and mourned the fact that they “didn’t even live to see the year of life.”

“They were amazing, so smart and it’s just so sad that they were so young and hadn’t even known life,” Harsten told FOX 2 Detroit.

Cannady’s brother says he doesn’t blame her, believes there’s more to the story

Her brother continued today that he didn’t blame her and believes there was more to the story than what’s been told, noting, “That (behaviour) was never, ever her.”

“And I wouldn’t blame her. I just want to know what happened. What was in your system? I need answers to that so I can know what kind of state of mind she was in. She never was, never.”

A GoFundMe The project, founded by Cannady’s family, has already raised nearly $7,000 from a $50,000 goal.
