David Moyes is a big “admirer” of Lucas Ocampos at West Ham United, who hopes to lure the La Liga star to the Premier League in the summer transfer window, as reported by ABC de Sevilla.
Less than three years ago, Burnley earned £10m for a well-travelled winger who was at the time in France for Marseille.
But since moving to Andalusia instead, Ocampos has been glowing brighter than Ross Gellar’s crunch after an impromptu teeth whitening session.
To the extent that, with Burnley’s Premier League rivals weighing their own offers, Sevilla have made it clear that Ocampos will go nowhere for a penny less than his nearly £60million release clause.
He’s come a long way since Sean Dyche tried to lure him to Turf Moor, that’s for sure.
West Ham’s new record deal?
Such a fee would make the former Milan and Monaco striker easily the most expensive signing in West Ham history. The hammers to have however, showed a willingness to break their transfer record given the right circumstances.
They have reportedly made two £50m bids for Leeds United duo Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, while raising £60m for Benfica’s unstoppable goalscorer Darwin Nunez.
Nunez is in the form of his life. He took his tally to 32 for the season with a striking finish at Anfield on Wednesday night. The same cannot really be said of Ocampos, however.
He has scored nine times for Sevilla. A number only surpassed by former Wolves youngster Rafa Mir. But the 10-time Argentina international hasn’t come close to matching the standards he set during a scintillating debut season at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
Ocampos scored 17 goals in a stellar 2019/20 season, including one against West Ham’s rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Europa League quarter-finals. That’s more than he’s managed in the last two seasons combined (16).
Nonetheless, ABC de Sevilla claims Moyes remains a huge admirer of Ocampos. The Hammers boss faced him in European competition just last month.
An artist with a warrior’s spirit, Ocampos is a typically “Argentinian” attacker; Packed with quality, but also not averse to delving into the dark arts.
