Mrs Brown’s Boys will RETURN to screens with a new series

Mrs Brown’s Boys returns to television for a new four-part series.

The hit sitcom has been a staple of the Christmas television schedule for over a decade, but the upcoming episodes will be the first new series since 2013.

Creator Brendan O’Carroll – who also leads the cast as matriarch Agnes Brown – admitted the show has been “twice thwarted” due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as it was originally slated to hit screens in 2021.

Speaking of the new series, which will start filming in the spring before airing later this year after a 10-year hiatus, the 67-year-old comic said: “This mini-series was originally planned for 2021.

“Having been thwarted twice, first by Covid-19 and then by a post-Covid studio shortage, to finally have the chance to make this happen is fantastic.

Buckle up and hold on to your hats!’

BBC bosses are excited about the show’s return.

Josh Cole, Head of Comedy at BBC Studios, and Steven Canny, Executive Producer said: “There’s no one like Mrs Brown.

“An absolute force of outrageous wit and slapstick that keeps audiences hooked and laughing. It’s great to be back here.”

Jon Petrie, Director of Comedy added: “BBC Comedy is delighted to announce that after a decade since the last full series of Mrs Brown’s Boys, millions of viewers across the UK will be thrilled to hear that Brendan Agnes and the Bringing family back together for a brand new miniseries of his award-winning show.”

Brendan previously revealed he would love to bring U2 on the show, although he’s not a fan of celebrity cameos.

He said: “Normally we would never have famous people guest-starring on ‘Mrs. Brown’s Boys’. It’s not something we do.

“But the only thing I’d like to do is dress Bono and U2. I would make her play Foley’s at the end of the episode.’

Brendan admitted that he completely saw through the dream plot.

He said, “I would have Agnes walk up to them on stage just as they start playing one of their hits and say, ‘I don’t want to hear any of that.’

“And then she gets them to play crooner songs. That’s my only wish, so let’s see if that ever happens.”

It was reported back in 2020 that show creator Brendan had signed a new deal with the network to keep Mrs. Brown’s Boys on air until 2026.

He added that the new deal guarantees that any celebratory issue he creates will get a coveted slot every Christmas Day at 10pm.

If they don’t get the spot, they’re reportedly not obligated to do the Christmas episode at all.

Brendan told the Irish Sun: “We’ve been doing this for nine years – that’s six more than the Royle Family and more than Morecambe and Wise.

“This new deal we signed last week goes through 2026 which means I can grow into the role and we have a clause that guarantees Mrs Brown will air at 10pm on Christmas Eve or we pull it from ‘don’t have to make it.’

He added of the deal: “I wanted that because if it’s not good enough for Christmas Day then we shouldn’t be making it.”

The show has received a number of awards including the 2012 BAFTA Television Award for Best Situation Comedy and Best Comedy at the TV Choice Awards in the same year.

Brenden was nominated for a 2012 BAFTA for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Program but lost to Darren Boyd for his role on the Sky comedy series Spy.
