MSU shooting video scene.

An MSU shooting video shows the chaotic scene unfolding at Michigan State University when an active shooter was on the loose, police said.

In a video, which has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on Twitter, people can be seen running while screams can be heard. Then several police officers can be seen running in the opposite direction. Be warned that the language in the video is descriptive. You can watch the video later in this story.

According to scanner audio, A person matching the suspect’s description later shot himself as authorities approached him. A dispatcher said the shelter-in-place order was being lifted.

“UPDATE: There are 3 confirmed deaths. This is in addition to the 5 victims who were transported to the hospital.” MSU Police and Public Safety tweeted.

Interim Deputy Chief Chris Rozman said in a press conference that there were shootings at two locations on campus involving a single suspect. The shooting began at 8:18 p.m. at Berkey Hall on campus, Rozman said. Next came reports of a shooting at the union, according to Rozman. Police received multiple 911 calls and responded with minutes, he said. He said five victims were taken to hospital, but he did not disclose their condition, other than that several had sustained life-threatening wounds.

Rozman described the suspect as a black man wearing red shoes, a denim jacket and a ball cap.

Here’s what you need to know:

Scanner audio indicated multiple victims were found in two classrooms

The suspect’s motive is unclear. Scanner audio showed the shooter was initially at large and was seen in the cafeteria after the Berkey Hall shooting.

According to MSU Police and Public Safety, “Guns were fired near Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus.” Police urged people to “secure themselves on the spot immediately. The police are active on site.”

The scanner audio painted a grim scene. Access via Broadcastify showed people attempting to escape through a window, barricading themselves in rooms and victims were discovered in at least two classrooms.

First scanner reports are sometimes contradictory or even wrong. They painted a very active scene in the hour after the shooting broke out.

Officials described the shooter to a dispatcher as “possibly a black man wearing a mask and carrying a handgun” who was “last seen walking toward the union.”

A second video captured the massive law enforcement response to the scene

A second video captured the massive law enforcement response to the scene.

“The shooter is in the hallway right now,” an officer said on dispatch audio.

Police later wrote: “There is another reported shooting in IM East. The police react. There are several reported injuries. The media delivery area is currently being determined.”

“UPDATE: IM East is being backed up. It appears there is only one suspect at this point,” the police later wrote.

“Active shooting at Berkey Hall. Multiple casualties at this point,” an officer told the dispatcher. One victim was shot in the head and was not breathing, an official said on audio.

An MSU warning shared on the university website read: “MSU police report shots fired on or near the East Lansing campus. Safely in place immediately. Run, hide, fight. Running means moving away from danger when you can do so safely. Hiding is securing yourself in place, and fighting is protecting yourself when there is no other option.”

The warning was issued at 8:31 p.m. Eastern Time, the site said.
