Artists and actors are at odds with record labels and movie studios over a California bill that would limit how long entertainers can be kept on exclusive contracts.

The Free Artists from Industry Restrictions Act would revise California’s seven-year statute, removing an indemnity provision that prevents artists from walking out of record deals after seven years and reducing the time actors are kept off the market without pay between seasons.
