When Neil Kerley decided to work as player-manager for Glenelg from 1967, the team became his third in the league. He appeared in 55 games with the Tigers, was named Team’s Best and Fairest in 1967, and led the team to the 1969 Grand Final matchup with Sturt.

After losing to Jack Oateys Sturt, Kerley announced his retirement from league football after playing 276 SANFL games and scoring 123 goals over the course of a 16-year career that began in 1952.

Kerley retired from playing in 1969 and switched to full-time coaching in 1970, but stayed with Glenelg. He led the Tigers to the 1970 Grand Final where they again fell to Sturt, who was coached by Kerley’s former West Adelaide boss Jack Oatey and had just won his sixth consecutive Premiership.
