Nets Star Kyrie Irving Delivered Strong Challenge

Kyrie Irving #11 of the Brooklyn Nets leads a second-half foul against the Milwaukee Bucks in game two of the second series at the Eastern Conference at Barclays Center on June 7, 2021.

After a week of turmoil, Brooklyn Nets defender Kyrie Irving revealed he is picking his players and returning to the team next season.

After briefly flirting with the Los Angeles Lakers, which may not even be over yet, Irving is returning to the Nets with a $37 million one-year deal. What happens after that remains to be seen, and by not renewing his contract, Irving has left all five rumors open.

For now, attention can now focus on what the Nets will look like in the future with Ben Simmons, Kevin Durant and Irving at the core.

Stephen A. Smith posted a video on Twitter Follow Irving’s opt-in news and give him a challenge: show up for work.

Irving Hit with a challenge

Typically Smith shares his thoughts on ESPN’s First Take, but when he’s on vacation, he has to resort to a two-minute Twitter video.

He didn’t miss a beat and hit Irving with a truth bomb of the simple fact that he had to show up for work if he wanted to get a long-term contract from the Nets or another team.

“So you have to go to work?” he asks. “You have to show up to work. You really have to go to work. You have to go up there and earn that money. You have to show up to work. “

Smith has long said that Irving can miss time at any time, and that is supported by the fact that Irving has missed more than 30% of the games of his career, with a lot of them. That came during his time with the Nets.

“Guess what, Kyrie,” he continued. “No matter what options you may think you have, it all starts with you showing up to work first. Show up to work and you will have a future where you will make money. You’re not there to work, you’re stuck. Because even if someone wants you, they will still ask you to show up for work. Which means the long-term, four-year guarantees of over $200 million waiting for you, won’t work that way. “

What’s next for Kyrie?

Just because Irving opted to join the Nets, that doesn’t mean the rumors will end. The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports teams will continue to ask about the star guard.

“Several teams are expected to continue pursuing Irving through trade, but his opt-in makes clubs consider more carefully whether to trade assets in a deal for a whether the player will join the free agency unlimitedly in 2023,” he wrote. “Teams across the league understand Irving’s talent, and now a full season in 2022-23 allows him the opportunity to prove himself again, then return to the market and earn a maximum contract the following summer. “

Irving’s talent has never been in doubt, but his availability, as Smith mentioned, is always a concern for future teams. That whole story could change if Irving plays a full season with the Nets next year.
