New York Mets beat Brandon Nimmo, Mark Canha on IL after coach tests positive for COVID-19

NEW YORK – Midfielders Brandon Nimmo and Mark Canha were included on the injury list Friday after a New York coach tested positive for COVID-19.

No player was with the team in the Citi Field home opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Mets manager Buck Showalter, who did not identify the coach, confirmed that one of his staff members tested positive for coronavirus and was absent on Friday.

The team did not say whether Nimmo and Canha tested positive. Showalter would not say whether either player received a COVID-19 vaccine, but did acknowledge the rules for returning to the lineup under baseball’s new labor agreement are different for those players. vaccinated compared with those who were not vaccinated.

“I tested negative,” Showalter said. “But I don’t need me.”

Versatile second full-back Jeff McNeil moved to the left side of the field for Canha, and Travis Jankowski started Nimmo in central position. Robinson Canó plays second base.

Canha missed his first home opener against the Mets after signing a two-year, $26.5 million deal as a free agent in November. He won ,381 (8 eat 21) with four walks on a 5-2 road trip in New York to start the season.

Nimmo, who has scored in consecutive games, may have missed the final opener at home to the Mets – he could become a free agent next season. The sharp-eyed lead was 8-24 (.333) with six runs and four walks en route to Washington and Philadelphia.

“It’s a part of life in the 2020s, let alone baseball,” Showalter said. “We all depend on each other to do the right thing.”

To replace them on the active roster, the Mets have recalled midfielder Nick Plummer from Triple-A Syracuse and selected midfielder Matt Reynolds from Syracuse.

“That’s why you prepare for these things,” says Showalter. “There are a few others on duty in case we need them.”
