Premier League outfit Newcastle United have reportedly fallen through with a £21million bid for Sassuolo’s Italy international during the January transfer window tuttosport.

As Roberto Mancini mourned the death of his World Cup dreams after last week’s shock defeat by North Macedonia Azzurri The boss could probably have done without his own mother questioning his squad selection in the media.

“I would have called (Mario) Balotelli,” Ms. Mancini said Radio Uno. “He has incredible physical strength and nobody can stop him in front of goal.”

Thank you Mama. Really helpful.

Mancini’s decision to drop his former Manchester City and Inter Milan star from Italy’s squad for the World Cup play-offs has certainly sparked much debate. And not just at the Mancini dining table.

Balotelli is, after all, a born-again man in Turkey.

But in hindsight, perhaps Mancini should have had more confidence Another Striker is currently playing the best football of his career.

Will Newcastle United sign Giacomo Raspadori?

Giacomo Raspadori managed just over 20 minutes off the bench against North Macedonia. Just to rub salt in Mancini’s wounds, the Sassuolo poacher scored twice in a meaningless friendly win over Turkey five days later, showing the kind of ruthless finishing skills Italy so lacked on that fateful Thursday night.

The diminutive 22-year-old is perhaps the most natural finisher in the Italy squad.

According to Tuttosport, he was monitored by Juventus, Inter Milan and RB Leipzig. Newcastle, which is funded by those Saudi Arabian billionaires, saw a £21million bid a few months ago rejected by Sassuolo.

“In January, an English club asked for him,” says CEO Giovanni Carnevali while confirming Inter Milan’s interest TMW. “(But) for us, he’s a fundamental player.”

Bids for raspadori start at around £30million. If he had scored the goal that catapulted Italy into the World Cup, one would suspect his price tag would have been even higher with the summer window now just weeks away.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle plan to return with a new offer. Raspadori, a 5ft 8in penalty poacher in the shape of a young Michael Owen or Sergio Aguero would certainly give Eddie Howe another option in the last third.

“In technique and style of play I’m maybe similar to Aguero” said Raspadori in September. “But the ones I’ve studied the most are (Carlos) Tevez, (Antonio) Di Natale and also Paolo Rossi.”
