Newcastle open talks to sign £34m PL star, Gerrard is leading, Arsenal and Everton are also interested

Claim of the Spanish newspaper Sport Newcastle are leading the race for Aston Villa playmaker Philippe Coutinho on loan if Steven Gerrard’s side decide not to sign him for £34m. Arsenal and Everton are also lurking.

Coutinho, 29, has been sensational for Aston Villa since joining the club on a loan purchase deal from Barcelona. He has four goals and three assists in 10 games and is happy to work under old Liverpool team-mate Gerrard.

However, it remains to be seen if Villa will sign him permanently – especially considering his huge salary at Barcelona. The race is heating up and Newcastle have started talks to land Coutinho should Villa ignore a deal.

Arsenal and Everton are also said to be lurking on a potential move for Coutinho – although the latter has signed Dele Alli and is on the verge of potential relegation to the Championship under Frank Lampard.

Coutinho to Newcastle: Villa need to secure permanent deal

Aston Villa simply have to sign Coutinho on a permanent basis. Yes, his salary is huge and he will be in his 30s in June, but he is a player who can transform Villa from midfield into a challenger for the European places.

If Villa decides not to spend heavily on the Brazilian, there will be plenty of other suitors. Everton have next to no chance of getting him given their past at Liverpool. Arsenal have an excellent chance if they finish in the top four.

Newcastle will be able to afford him and may be able to convince Barcelona to only accept his offer to rule out opponents with a higher bid. But Villa will shoot himself in the foot if they don’t sign him.
