Newcastle United are keen to sign Everton midfielder Yerry Mina – but the departure of Rafael Benitez could only complicate their pursuit.

That’s according to TEAMtalk, who claim that Newcastle are eyeing Mina in the search for a new centre-back.

A large number of defenders have been linked with Newcastle in recent times, most notably the likes of Sven Botman and Diego Carlos.

Those deals are proving difficult to pull off, meaning Newcastle are now looking to be a little closer to home.

Mina is on Newcastle’s radar and this report claims that the Warblers could chase him out on loan if they have two loan slots available in the country.

The problem is that Everton have just fired former Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez.

The Toffees are chasing a new manager and may not be focused on a transfer right now.

Add to that they may not want to let any players go before their new manager has had a chance to analyze Everton’s squad.

That means Newcastle may not get a quick answer from Everton if they call Mina, which will only add to the frustration.

The only way Newcastle could get this Mina done quickly would be if they offered Everton cash they couldn’t refuse.

Everton spent £28.5m to sign Mina from Barcelona in 2018, and will likely want most of it sold out.

Mina is out of contract in 2023, meaning Everton could come under some pressure to sell before he leaves for nothing for 18 months.

That is something Newcastle can use to their advantage, believing they can strike a deal to lure Everton in to let the Colombians go.

This would be a risky move. Mina has shown real quality in the Premier League, but injuries continue to be a big problem.

Mina has only played six Premier League games this season as muscle problems have haunted him.

Will that get better for the 27-year-old in the future? It’s hard to imagine the situation changing with just one club switch.

Newcastle need players they can count on now and during the relegation battle, and Mina’s injury is a huge red flag.

Hailed as ‘awesome’ and ‘monster’ by Michael Ball earlier this seasonMina’s future is unclear but Newcastle can now hope to get his signature this month.
