Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour on Friday summoned a group of top Paris Fashion Week insiders to announce that the theme of next year’s Met Gala will be the work of the late Karl Lagerfeld.
The World’s Most Fashionable Fundraiser takes place on the first Monday of May 1st May 2023 and celebrates the work of the German-born couturier who worked for Chanel, Fendi and Chloe and died in 2019 aged 85.
The Met Gala theme is borrowed from the accompanying exhibit at the Met’s Costume Institute in New York.
It will be titled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty and will bring together around 150 of his creations to explore his “stylistic language”.
Lagerfeld’s original sketches are also on display.
“The exhibition will examine Lagerfeld’s complex working methodology and trace the evolution of his fashion from two-dimensional to three-dimensional,” Costume Institute star curator Andrew Bolton said in a statement.
“Finding expression in recurring aesthetic themes of his fashion, the fluid lines of his sketches fused his designs for Balmain, Patou, Chloe, Fendi, Chanel and his eponymous label Karl Lagerfeld, creating a diverse and prolific body of work unparalleled in fashion history.”
Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, presented at the museum’s Tisch Gallery, is on view from May 5 to July 16, 2023.
