NHL . playoff watch rankings update

Saturdays on the NHL schedule are usually packed and there is no deviation from that trend today. But three specific pairs deserve special attention as the race to win tickets to the knockout round of the Stanley Cup 2022 continues.

The first view at 3 p.m. ET is a preview of the potential Cup Finals, as the Colorado Avalanche (1st in Central) hosts the Pittsburgh Penguins (3rd in the subway). Because of a scheduling irregularity, these two teams will run it again on Tuesday. But for more on this particular match, be sure to check out our viewer guide for the game.

At 7 p.m. ET, the Minnesota Wild (#2 in Central) heads to Raleigh to face Hurricane Carolina (#1 on the subway). These two played a contentious match on February 12 at Saint Paul, with the home side Wild winning 3-2.

In the end, the top late game made the St. Louis Blues (3 in Central) against Calgary Flames (1 in Pacific), after the Blues’ first loss to Edmonton Oilers on Friday night. The previous two games in the regular season series were fun – for the home team. The Blues won 7-1 on January 24 at St. Louis, while The Flames won 5-1 on January 27 in Calgary. This one will be played in Alberta; Is the previous trend correct?

As we enter the final stages of the 2021-22 regular season, it’s time to check out all the playoff races – along with the teams jockeying for a spot in the 2022 NHL draft lottery.

Note: Playoff opportunities are through FiveThirtyEight. The tragic numbers are thanks to Damian Echevarrieta of the NHL.

Race for 1st place

The NHL uses a draw to determine the top order of the first round, so the team that finishes last is not guaranteed the first choice. As of 2021, a team can move move up to a maximum of 10 slots if they win the draw, so only 11 teams are eligible for the draw for pick 1. Full details of the process can be found here.
