OL Reign Clinch NWSL Shield

OL Reign won the Shield for the first Shield win since 2015 and the third Shield title for the franchise under coach Laura Harvey. This will be OL Reign’s sixth trip to the NWSL Playoffs, where they will attempt to win the coveted NWSL Championship that has eluded the franchise since its inaugural season.

The team is undefeated in their last seven games, with Jess Fishlock, Bethany Balcer and 2021 NWSL MVP Megan Rapinoe in top form going into the playoffs.

  • The conclusion of the regular season means individual awards will soon be handed out. The first belongs to Alex Morgan, with her Golden Boot as the league’s top scorer (15 goals). She played in 17 games from 16 starts and all of her goals this season have come from inside the box – 12 left-footed, two right-footed and one goal with a header.

Drama for Red Stars

The Chicago Red Stars have punched their ticket to the playoffs in dramatic fashion. Sixth and last place finish in the playoffs of the season was on the final day of the season between Chicago Red Stars and Angel City FC. After the tie between North Carolina and San Diego, a “win and in” scenario was in play for the Red Stars. Angel City needed a 16-goal miracle win over Chicago to sniff the last playoff spot.

Mallory Pugh and Yuki Nagasato scored in Sunday night’s 2-0 win over Angel City. Take a look at the game winner from Pugh, who secured the final spot in the playoffs.

The Red Stars will have their hands full against the Wave at Snapdragon Stadium. Chicago didn’t score against the California team and Red Stars coach Chris Petrucelli noted the lack of goals in the post-game comments.

“Well, I think first of all we played them twice and didn’t score, so we have to find a way to score,” Petrucelli said. “But I think we’ll be ready to play. You saw tonight – you know when the chips are down and really matter? – It’s a group ready to play and it’s led by players [with] great characters, people who can carry a team. They’ll definitely be ready to play against San Diego.”

Alyssa Naeher, USA women’s national team and goaltender for the Chicago Red Stars, praised the team’s performance, which consists of veterans and several first-year players, and believes the two-week preparation for the Quarterfinals will be beneficial for the newer members of the team.

“It’s all in the prep,” Naeher said. “The more prepared you are for the game, the more confident you can be in what you brought in – you did everything you could do and the game is what it is. But we can focus and they can focus on the preparation. We have a game plan and we [know] what the expectations are – then you just go out and play. You don’t have to think as much when you feel more prepared.”
