NYPD rookie, 22, in critical condition after shooting himself in staff locker room

A New York police officer has reportedly shot himself in the locker room after less than a year on the job.
The 22-year-old male officer was transferred to Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx after allegedly suffering self-inflicted gunshot wounds in the 47th Precinct locker room around 11 a.m. Tuesday.
He is in critical condition after the bullet hit his cheek, but he expected to survive. A source told DailyMail.com the bullet missed the officer’s brain.
The source also said police put the officer in the back of a squad car and drove him to the hospital.
Nine law enforcement officers, eight men and one woman, have died by suicide across the country so far this year, according to data collected by Blue HELP. Last year, the total rose to a worrying 154, up from 141 the year before.

Speaking about the incident at an independent news conference, Mayor Eric Adams said: “I communicated earlier with the police commissioner [Keechant Sewell] and our hearts and prayers are with his family.’

Steven Hernandez was pronounced dead just before 12.30pm on January 10 at the Lefrak City Apartments in Flushing, Queens. Hernandez was part of the 121st District on Staten Island. It is unclear whether he lived in the building or attended the medical department housed there.

Hernandez was a six-year veteran who joined the force in 2017. He was transferred to the 121st Ward last year.
He took to social media to show signs of mental health issues.
Hernandez frequently referred to his “racing thoughts” and finding a therapist.

In addition, male first responders were significantly more likely to die by suicide than their female counterparts. Of the 186 deaths in 2022, 168 were committed by men and only 18 by women.
In the past six years, the number of female first responders who have committed suicide has never exceeded 21, compared to 228 males in the data collected by Blue HELP
Among the record deaths, it was noted that among those who took their own lives, police officers averaged almost 16.5 years of service. Firefighters averaged 14.77, correctional officers averaged 11.31, emergency responders averaged 10.83, and dispatchers averaged three years of service.
