Odell Beckham Jr. files lawsuit against Nike for missing millions

Odell Beckham Jr. comes for Nike– the legal way! He claims the sportswear company suppressed sneaker sales, which earned him a contract extension. As a result, OBJ estimates Nike kept more than $20 million out of its pockets! Corresponding TMZ Sports, Odell’s attorney, Daniel Davillier, filed a lawsuit against Nike to collect his client’s alleged coins.

The lawsuit reveals that Odell considered moving to Adidas after his contract expired in 2017 Reportedly a HUGE contractinstead of losing Odell.

Now, Beckham Jr. says the fine print in Nike’s offering differs from what Adidas offered. He says Nike’s contract structure made it “impossible to trigger very valuable contract renewals,” per TMZ. Odell released a statement on the lawsuit.

“Being a Nike athlete and a brand icon has been a dream I’ve had since I was a child. I wanted to be the next Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, LeBron James or Kobe Bryant in the Nike family. When Nike exercised their right of first refusal to complete the Adidas offering and not only kept me as a Nike athlete but also made me one of their brand icons, my dream was fulfilled,” said OBJ. “Unfortunately, Nike has not lived up to its commitments. Throughout our partnership I have kept my promise and fulfilled my commitments to the brand. I am very disappointed that I had to take these actions to ensure Nike delivers on its commitments and promises.”

The relationship with Nike began to crumble in March

OBJ claims the relationship with Nike began to crumble in March 2022 after the shoe company canceled its check. Instead of paying OBJ the expected $2.6 million, the retailer reportedly held $2 million of the money without warning.

Odell says he later learned Nike withheld the money because he breached his contract by changing his boots and gloves last season. However, the Los Angeles Rams player insists he was forced to customize his Nike boots because the retailer didn’t provide him with shoes that matched his new team’s colors.

He added that he always customizes his gloves to maintain his “high fashion brand” look and that Nike hasn’t objected in the past. In his statement, Odell said he is “Take position” for yourself and on “to set a precedent for all athletes who have dedicated their lives to the sport they love.”

“We are accountable for fulfilling our obligations under our contracts, but we also have to hold powerful companies like Nike accountable for fulfilling their obligations,” OBJ said.

The lawsuit says Odell believes Nike added the penalties to pressure him into signing a lesser deal with them. In his statement, the athlete said the lawsuit was also intended to set a precedent for athletes who “don’t have the means to stand up for themselves.”

Odell also asked that questions be escalated to his attorney, Daniel, but not before making clear his intent to shed light on athletes and their rights.

“I look forward to resolving this issue and I hope we can start a real conversation about protecting athletes and protecting their rights,” Odell said. “It happens too often in the sports industry and it’s time for a change.”
