Sporting Lisbon star Matheus Nunes is set to resign from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer after he was reported to have turned down a move to Newcastle United in January A bola.

Pep Guardiola can often get a little carried away when discussing an opposing player’s talents – as Nathan Redmond can attest – but his lavish praise for Portugal international Nunes is certainly worth repeating when the race for his Signature gets hot.

Ahead of Man City’s stunning Champions League win over Sporting last month, Guardiola described the prancing playmaker as “one of the best players in the world today”.

If he had now said “tomorrow” instead of “today”, Pep’s praise might have been a little truer.

Nunes certainly has the potential to become ‘one of the best’ midfielders on the continent. He is creative, confident and incredibly fast. But he’s not there yet, although he worked his way into the Portugal squad ahead of the World Cup in Qatar after helping Sporting win their first Primeira Liga title in two decades.

Will Pep Guardiola sign Matheus Nunes for Man City?

It will come as no surprise to learn that Manchester City have been in talks Los Leoes over a deal that could see Nunes join the Etihad during the summer transfer window (A bola).

If there is a manager capable of turning the 23-year-old into ‘one of the best players in the world’ it is a man who has dominated arguably Europe’s most competitive league with Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabian Delph at left-back .

According to A Bola, Nunes has told his agent he will only leave Sporting for an elite club capable of competing for silverware abroad. Manchester City for example.

Because of this, he appears to have little interest in a £33m move to Molineux, despite the presence of a heavily Iberian-influenced dressing room.

Nunes, who also turned down a move to Newcastle in January for a similar reason, has been identified by Wolves as part of a succession plan. Both Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho finally face an uncertain future in the Black Country (Athletic).

Wolves are also keen on Nunes’ Sporting teammate Joao Palhinha. The midfield behemoth is a longtime target for the Molineux men.
