ONLY ON 8: Political analyst Steve Flowers on race for White House, U.S. House District 2

Posted:

Action 8 political analyst Steve Flowers shared his insights on the presidential election and the open U.S. House of Representatives District 2 seat.

Over the weekend, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed announced he would not run for the congressional seat. Flowers says that makes the race wide open, although he says someone from Montgomery would still have an advantage. Federal courts recently redrew district boundaries to give black Alabamians a chance at greater representation. The deadline for candidates to qualify is Friday, November 10th at 5:00 p.m.

Today, former President Donald Trump took the stand in his civil fraud trial in New York. Trump is accused of inflating his company’s assets to obtain more favorable terms on loans and insurance. Flowers discussed whether this and the other cases Trump is facing would hurt his support in Alabama.

There’s also a new CBS News poll showing how people feel about a potential rematch between Biden and Trump in the 2024 presidential race. The poll shows 18% of likely voters surveyed say they believe Biden’s policies would improve their personal finances, compared to 45% who said Trump. When asked about the possibility of the U.S. entering war, 49% said they believed Biden’s policies would increase the likelihood that the U.S. would become involved in war, compared to 43% who said Trump would keep the U.S. out of war .

Flowers said Biden’s problems extend beyond these issues because he now trails Trump in several key battleground states. However, the election is still about a year away.
