California is a mess and Governor Gavin Newsom is sending treats to his citizens. It has the highest gas prices in the nation – over $6 a gallon for Premium. The Western States Petroleum Association explains, “The first $1.27 a gallon we pay at the pump now is taxes and regulatory programs.” Pretty easy to fix, but not for Mr. Newsom, who, like Oprah, suggested sending Californians $400 gas tax rebate debit cards: You get a card. You get a card. Everyone gets a card!
Lawmakers may vote on it this week. Of course, for many commuters, $400 is hardly a month’s worth of fuel. California, which has the fifth largest oil reserves of any US state, should have some of the cheapest gas in the country. Also, Mr. Newsom’s gift cards aren’t really a gas tax rebate. EV owners who don’t buy gas also get a card, although they’re already saving up to a third on their electric bills with California’s Home Charging EV2-A electricity plan.
