Mesut Özil is convinced Fenerbahce team-mate Arda Guler is on track to become a world-class footballer, while Premier League giants Arsenal and Liverpool scout the Turkish sensation sporx.

A sleek left-footed playmaker of Turkish descent, 17-year-old Guler has been compared to Fenerbahce’s former World Cup-winning Real Madrid superstar.

And Turkey’s teenage sensation justified those comparisons in a 5-2 win over Alanyaspor in March.

Not content to open his senior football account with a smart volley, a great assist was the icing on the cake.

“A great goal and a great assist. Quality,” said Özil after Guler’s groundbreaking performance a few weeks ago.

“You will be a world star.”

The only problem was that Guler was a six-minute substitute in Fener’s 2-0 win in the Istanbul derby against the crisis-hit visitors.

“I don’t think Arda will stay in Turkey for too long,” said Erol Tokgozler, Guler’s former coach at Genclerbirligi CNN Turk March. “I know there are offers from Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

“With every passing game, the number of these (interested) teams will increase. 20 to 30 million euros for Arda will be very usual (bids).”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta forced Özil out the door in the Emirates. But he has managed to build an exciting Gunners side around a group of highly talented young players, à la Guler.

Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kieran Tierney, Aaron Ramsdale, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Emile Smith Rowe were all regulars in 2021/22.
