It only took a day of training camp for Baker Mayfield to find some sophisticated shade aimed at the Cleveland Browns.
On the way to practice, Mayfield was greeted by fans shouting his name but spotted someone wearing a Browns jersey. Mayfield looked over and quickly said, “Get that shirt out,” according to Sports Illustrated’s Schuyler Callihan.
Later in the day, ESPN’s David Newton caught fans in orange and brown outfits and told her story.
“Born in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. … 43 years as a Browns fan. Glad Baker came here to go to Carolina instead of to the Steelers. And I will be preparing for the opening day of the Panthers against the Browns,” she speaks while holding up a sign welcoming Mayfield to Carolina.
Baker Mayfield says he’s grateful for his time in Cleveland
The Browns went through a terrible divorce from Mayfield after acquiring Deshaun Watson through a blockbuster deal to take over the quarterback position. After much speculation, the Panthers have finally decided to move to Mayfield on July 6, with the former top pick converting some of the salaries into incentives to make that happen.
The Panthers will pay just $4.85 million in Mayfield’s salary, while the Browns will pay $10.5 million, according to ESPN. Mayfield converted the remaining $3.5 million into incentives, which he could earn during the season.
“There was a bit of sacrifice on all three fronts, between Cleveland, Carolina and me,” Mayfield said during his introductory press conference. “For me, first of all, it’s ready for a fresh start. I’m incredibly grateful for the four years I’ve had in Cleveland – it’s a great football town. That was the beginning of my career, no matter how long, God willing, it will be. I am very grateful for that. “
Mayfield’s tenure in Cleveland was a tumultuous one, but without a doubt, he helped turn the franchise around. He led the Browns to their first playoff win in more than two decades in the 2020-21 season, passing 3,563 yards, 26 touchdowns and just eight interceptions throughout the campaign.
However, Mayfield took a step back last year, with injuries and internal turmoil partly to blame. He unleashed 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions as the Browns stumbled to finish 8-9.
Mayfield was asked if he holds a grudge against the Browns family and offered what might not be a full-fledged answer, especially considering his latest statement.
“I try not to,” Mayfield said with a smile.
Browns could see Baker Mayfield in week 1
If Mayfield beats Sam Darnold for a starting gig with the Panthers, he’ll see his old team back in Week 1. The Browns aren’t ahead of themselves, though.
“I wish him well, I think he’s in a really good position,” Browns . head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters from training camp on July 27. “We’ll see – I’m not going to tell Coach Rhule about who’s going to play. We will have time to talk about those things.”
While the Browns are still dealing with their own QB situation with the possibility of a suspension for Watson, Mayfield will face a few old friends in the passersby Jadeveon Clowney and Myles Garrett.
Garrett set a franchise record 16 times last season and was asked if he was thinking about sacking his former defender.
“Not really,” said Garrett. “Some of my friends did, but it was good for them. They can make their jokes, they can have fun with it. But I have a lot of time with Jacoby (Brissett) and all the other midfielders I’ve seen before, (Josh) Dobbs. Just being able to go against them, go up against Jed (Wills Jr.) and just try to improve my technique and fundamentals and take those points home with some younger guys, that’s it. is all I really focus on. “
The plot is pretty good, but it all goes back to Mayfield winning the starter job. If he didn’t, he’d just have a clipboard by the side when the Browns came to town.
