Midway through the second quarter of the Miami Dolphins’ Week 4 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a scary injury that drew national attention.
After being knocked down by Bengal defenseman Josh Tupou, Tagovailoa was spotted on the floor with fingers twisted in an unnatural position, a sign the Dolphins quarterback was clearly injured.
After medical staff examined Tagovailoa in the field for a few minutes, he was placed on a gurney and sent to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for further evaluation.
With a 3-0 team going into the game, the loss of Tagovailoa was a huge blow to Miami, who lost the game 27-15 to the now 2-2 Cincinnati roster. But Tagovailoa’s life mattered much more than the result of the game on Thursday night.
Many NFL fans watching the game urged the NFL to investigate the Dolphins following Tagovailoa’s injury. That’s due to an incident that occurred in Miami’s Week 3 win over the Buffalo Bills in which Tagovailoa appeared to have sustained a head injury but was able to return to the game shortly after the injury, which Tagovailoa claimed after the injury to his back .
The injury came just four days before Tagovailoa suffered the injury against the Bengals, raising questions about whether Tagovailoa was healthy enough to play against Cincinnati.
Mahomes sends message to Tua
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took to Twitter during Thursday night’s showdown and sent a message to Tagovailoa following his scary injury.
“Prayers up man…” Mahomes wrote.
Other Twitter users flooded the comments section of Mahomes’ tweet to also respond to Tagovailoa’s injury.
“Never lie in concussion reports Patrick….Dirty how Tua was done here. We want you to be safe and healthy above all, mate,” wrote one Twitter user.
“Always protect your health. For football reasons, please protect your health. Just because you can play doesn’t mean you should. Hope Tua is doing well,” wrote another user.
“Bengals fans have been calling other players dirty for football matches for 3 weeks and their player just slapped Tua on the back just as he was going down,” wrote another user. “Career years players always finish playing the Bengals. Investigate the organization.”
“Classic fencing response to acute head injury,” wrote another user. “The doctors who let him back in the game last week and let him play this week need to be sued and have their medical licenses revoked. Just awful!”
Update on Tua’s injury
After being transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, the dolphins shared an update on Tagovailoa.
“Tua Tagovailoa was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. He is conscious and has movement in all his extremities,” the team wrote on Twitter.
Miami provided another update on Tagovailoa after the game.
“QB Tua Tagovailoa is expected to be released from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and will fly home with the team tonight,” the team wrote.
It’s all great news for Tagovailoa after a scary incident for the third-year quarterback.
