Patriots’ Matt Judon Ranked Team Player of the Year

Matthew Judon

Is quarterback Mac Jones the New England Patriots’ No. 1 player? Not according to WEEI’s Andy Hart.

In the Patriots’ player ranking, which lists each guy from best to worst, Jones is seventh on the list. Who is number 1? Veteran racer Matthew Judon. In a brief explanation of Judon’s top spot on the list, Hart wrote:

“He’s a professional bowler in Baltimore and he’s a professional bowler in New England.”

No lies were discovered in Hart’s statement. Judon made the Pro Bowl in 2021 after his first season in New England. The 29-year-old made his third Pro Bowl game in a row and set a career record of 12.5 covers.

His approximate value rating of 14 is also the highest of his NFL career. Judon is once again expected to power the Patriots’ defense in 2022, though there are several new faces in the unit alongside him.

For now, it doesn’t look like Dont’a Hightower will be returning. He could be replaced by Raekwon McMillan or even Cameron McGrone at central defender. The Patriots parted ways with Jamie Collins in 2021, but he’s also not on the current Patriots roster.

New England traded Chase Winovich to the Cleveland Browns for Mack Wilson, who would also take the paved situation into account. While sportier, the Patriots’ defenders will be younger and less experienced.

How that affects the overall quality of the unit remains to be seen.

New England has 2 of the most valuable contracts in the NFL

Judon isn’t just one of the Patriots’ best players, he’s probably the biggest bargain. According to Pro Football Focus, Judon and the Patriots widely, Kendrick Bourne has the 20th and 17th most valuable contracts in the NFL.

Judon is officially in production for the Patriots in 2021 and he won’t turn 30 until August. This shows he still has enough time to stay productive throughout the four years of the deal. for $54.5 million. Judon now has three years and $34.5 million left on his contract.

Bourne hasn’t had a year of as much influence as Judon, but his contract is much more modest. 55 receptions to Bourne for 800 yards and 5 TDs in 2021 make his three-year $15 million contract every penny.

Bourne only has two years and $9.75 million left on his contract. If he continues to perform the way he did in 2021, he will be well worth the investment.

The Patriots amend the contract of David Andrews

New England is still trying to create more cap space, and their most recent move to increase flexibility came on June 26. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Patriots saved 2.1 million dollars of cap space by restructuring the deal with veteran midfielder David Andrews.

Pre-signing deal multiple draft options include third quarterback Bailey Zappe and wide speed collector Tyquan Thornton. As we get closer to training camp and then pre-season, there will likely be more cost-conscious moves, including the trade of famous veterans.

Keep stable.
