Patriots React to the Launch of Jarrett Stidham’s Raiders

Former New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham made his debut against the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night in the annual Hall of Fame game.

The Raiders are taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Stidham has some bright spots for his new club. He scored his first NFL touchdown in nearly two years on the 12-yard TD run. Ethan Hurwitz of Fund Chronicles tweeted the highlight:

The play drew a reaction from the McCourty Twins Instagram page run by the Patriots safety organization Devin McCourty and his twin brother, former Patriot and recently retired Jason McCourty. Someone saw their Instagram story cheering for Stidham’s “wheel”. Additionally, Patriots punter and former All-Pro Jake Bailey took note of the quarterback’s score.

Zack Cox by NESN Recorded and published stories:

Stidham had another memorable moment, though it played out incompletely.

He took a shot from an oncoming Jaguars player, but not before skimming a precise down pass to the Raiders’ Tyron Johnson. The pass was accurate for the money, but unfortunately, the third-year payee was unable to keep the pass that would have put the Raiders within five yards of the Jaguars. Here’s a look at the play. Aidan Maher of TWSN tweeted it:

The Raiders beat the Jaguars 27-11 to usher in the Josh McDaniels era with a win. However, the game results are not so important in the pre-season. Coaches and fans are more interested in the development of certain players.

Stidham is someone the Raiders coaching staff are probably keeping a close eye on. He is battling Nick Mullens for the back-up quarterback, which means he has just one play left to start.

How well was Jarrett Stidham playing on Thursday?

Overall, Stidham just had a statistically good day. He completed 8 of 15 passes for 96 yards, 0 TDs or picks. His only rush was the 12-yard jump for TD. Stidham has been fired three times, once by general No 1 pick Travon Walker. Stidham’s day would have looked much better if Johnson had skipped that pass on the sidelines.

It will complete about 35 yards. A day 9 to 15 for 131 yards and perhaps a second TD run or a pass would be much more appealing. True, it wasn’t a terrible performance, as the 25-year-old looked relaxed and commanded the conflict during his time on the field.

Mullens is a bit more precise than Stidham. Mullens completed 8/11 72-yard throws, 0 TDs or interceptions. Mullens could not find the end zone on the ground. He recorded a rush to no avail.

Raiders rely heavily on racing against Jags. Las Vegas made 33 to 32 passes between Stidham, Mullens and Chase Garbers, who completed 4/6 passes for 35 yards. All TDs of Raid have gone to the ground. Run Back Austin Walter and Ameer Abdullah join Stidham with their own rush TDs.

New England’s QB situation is quite simple

The Patriots are locked into the Mac Jones experience in midfield, and his reserve will likely be Brian Hoyer when the season begins. However, the team drafted Bailey Zappe out of Western Kentucky this spring. Zappe performed very well in training camp and looks like a strong candidate to be a long-term backup for Jones if everything goes according to plan with the original signal caller.
