Paul Merson’s comments on Aston Villa fans should be music to Leeds’ ears

Paul Merson has stated there is no way Steven Gerrard wants to send ‘40,000’ Aston Villa fans off the ground with a loss to Burnley.

On Thursday evening, not only Aston Villa will cheer on their own team, but also that of Leeds United.

Leeds are currently out of harm’s way in the Premier League table heading into the final week of the season.

But Burnley, who play their game in hand at Villa Park on Thursday night, can move above them by at least a point.

If they lose it will be in Leeds’ hands on Sunday and they will then know and be certain of a win at Brentford.

Anyhow, Merson’s comments about an expectant Villa Park should be music to Leeds ears, as he told Sky Sports.

“If I had to choose which camp I’d rather be in among the relegation contenders, it would be because of that point against Brighton Leeds – one I think will keep them,” said Merson.

“On Thursday, Burnley goes to Aston Villa, who play their last home game of the season. They must give fans optimism for the final home game so Villa will be the greatest Trier in the world on Thursday night.

“Steven Gerrard isn’t going to want 40,000 people leaving that floor with next season’s hiring.

“He’s going to want to send those fans away feeling like they’re going to buy a new season ticket with the thought of Gerrard turning things around. That only happens if they beat Burnley.

“I don’t expect Burnley to get anything at Aston Villa so with a game to go it will be totally out of their hands.”

VILLA FANS WILL NOT ALLOW PLAYERS TO START THEIR FLIP-FLOPS

As Villa season ticket holders, there’s no way home fans will allow the team to settle for anything other than a win.

It’s the last home game of the season, at the end of what has been an average season, and fans will want to leave on a high.

Also, at the end of the game, players will be roaming the field with their families, so don’t do this on the back of a loss.

In any case, in order to win in Villa Park, Burnley needs to unlock some of his ancient tools, as this will be difficult for them.
