Dancing With the Stars professional dancer Peta Murgatroyd and her husband Maks Chmerkovskiy have been separated while the latter was in Ukraine amid the country’s Russian invasion.
Murgatroyd open to ET about her husband’s experience in the country when it was invaded.
“Getting the call and seeing him frantically packing his bags and trying to get out of the hotel was like I nearly had a heart attack,” she told the outlet. “I had to sit down and calm down for him. And then the next eight days were life changing. Absolutely life changing.”
Murgatroyd once said she “literally wrote him a text, almost a farewell text, as if something had happened”.
Chmerkovskiy has already returned to Poland to help
After Chmerkovskiy left Ukraine and returned to Los Angeles, he returned to Poland to help at the border with his organization Baranova 27, which he runs with his brother Val Chmerkovskiy.
Maks was also joined in her BStrong initiative by former “Dancing With the Stars” celebrity partner Bethenny Frankel.
When Maks first returned, Murgatroyd shared a long and emotional post about her reunion with her husband and thanked her fans for sticking with her through the crisis.
“Thank you from the bottom of my soul for all the support and the constant outpouring of love. I see everything and am forever grateful. oo”, She wrote in the mail.
Maks wants to return to normal but called for help
Maks told ET he wants to get back to normal, but that it’s been a struggle. The couple celebrated beauty awards, one of which went to Murgatroyd’s product Peta Jane Tanning Mousse.
“The fact that we’re here is the crowning moment like, How do you get back to the normality of everything?” he has asked. “What is the new normal? For me it does not exist without the association of the ongoing war. It hasn’t settled down. It’s just the shifting of some things.”
He also said he was very “lucky” that his wife was there for him.
“I made that commitment,” he shared. “We work with Barnova 27, my organization. We’re pushing out, we’re working on other ways to bring other things into the country and what’s needed. We are working to develop livable cities, makeshift cities that might serve as something else; Try to attract technology, 3D printing and so on.”
The dancer said he is dedicated to raising awareness of the crisis in Ukraine.
“When I got home, I realized that this is so far away and it’s difficult to tell the story over and over again,” he said. “So I’m just taking this opportunity to say, ‘It’s just getting started.’ People are starting to need even more help right now and we should stick to it.”
Dancing With the Stars has not yet been renewed for season 31. If renewed, the show will return sometime in mid-September 2022.
