Traditionally, tin or aluminum gifts are requested for the 10th anniversary. That fits game of Thrones‘ episode, which turns 10 today given how many characters have been pierced by sharp pieces of metal over the course of the hour.
On June 2nd, it will be a decade since Season 3, Episode 9 – known to fans as “The Red Wedding” – first aired on HBO. The first season of the epic drama had established it as an unshakable adaptation of George RR Martin A Song of Ice and Fire Series in which main characters could meet violent ends without warning. Still, The Rains of Castamere shocked those unfamiliar with Martin’s novels when it detailed the brutal deaths of Catelyn and Robb Stark, as well as Robb’s new wife, Talisa, and all the friendly Stark men in the room.
“Your Grace, I feel like I’ve been negligent in my duties,” Walder Frey tells Robb just before the madness begins. “I haven’t shown you the hospitality you deserve. My king was married and I owe my new queen a wedding gift.” Sign of the slaughter!
TVLine wrote about the episode back in 2013 (read the full synopsis here), but we thought we’d take a bloody stroll down memory lane by reminiscing about the events of Edmure Tully and Rosin Frey’s wedding. Scroll down for the highlights.

Everything seems great when the band (with Coldplay drummer Will Champion) start playing at the wedding feast. Perhaps, as Walder Frey previously said, defusing the conflict between the Starks and his family really will be as simple as, “The wine will flow red, the music will play loud, and we’ll put this mess behind us.”

Up at the teacher’s table, Edmure and his new bride certainly seem to get along well.

And out in the crowd, Catelyn, Brynden “The Blackfish” Tully and Roose Bolton seem to be having fun.

It seems all the more ominous in hindsight when Bolton told the maid not to fill his glass. “Aren’t you drinking, Lord Bolton?” Catelyn wonders. “You should never do that, madam,” he replies kindly. “Dulls the senses.”

“A sword needs a scabbard, and a wedding needs a bedclothes,” announces Walder Frey, and Edmure and Roslin are whisked away to make things official. (One is much more enthusiastic about it than the other.)

Then we experience a few nice moments before it goes downhill. First, Catelyn tells Roose that Ned has forbidden the burial ceremony at their wedding. We love a man ahead of his time!

Then Talisa – who we learn is pregnant – tells Robb that if her child were a boy, she would like him Eddard, after Robb’s father. He is visibly touched. Oh.

I hope you enjoyed the happy part of the evening because it’s over. The doors close in rapid succession and the band begins to play “The Rains of Castamere…”.

…and the carnage begins. A man approaches Talisa and repeatedly stabs her in the stomach.

Then Robb shoots a few arrows in the chest before he can even figure out what’s going on.

Meanwhile, Arya arrives outside with the dog and realizes something is very wrong…

…especially when she witnesses Robb’s direwolf Gray Wind die at the hands of Frey’s men. Poor puppy.

And then, just as Arya tries to force her way inside to help her family, the dog smacks her over the head and carries her to safety.

Back inside, the badly injured Robb crawls toward his dying wife as the violence around him subsides…because pretty much every other Stark or Stark-friendly person is dead.

A distraught (and self-harmed) Catelyn grabs Frey’s young wife/daughter/iiiih and holds the knife to the girl’s neck while she begs Walder to let Robb go, “Or I’ll cut your wife’s throat!” He shrugs. “I’ll find someone else,” he says lightheartedly.

Bolton then closes in on Robb, deals the killing blow and says, “Sayings to the Lannisters.”

A frantic Catelyn screams in terror and slits Frey’s wife’s throat…
