Newcastle United aren’t waving a white flag in their pursuit of Goncalo Inacio, or so it seems.

The Magpies tried to sign the Sporting Lisbon defender during the January transfer window but fell through in a £25m attempt.

And the 20-year-old, who extended his contract in Portugal until 2026 on April 1, appeared to be another nail in the coffin of Newcastle’s ambitions to bring the player to St James’s Park.

However, Inacio’s release clause remains at £33m and loud recordingthe Tyneside outfit insist on signing him this summer.

but recording adds that Newcastle have been told Inacio is a “non-negotiable asset” and that he is not going anywhere.

However, sporting boss Rúben Amorim would be willing to negotiate the right price, especially when a total deal costs Newcastle around £37m, which is oddly higher than his reported takeover clause.

In any case, a £4m difference is unlikely to be seen as a deal breaker by those in power at St James’s Park.

Remember United are owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund which is worth hundreds of billions of pounds making players like Inacio easily affordable.

The problem is that the selling clubs know how wealthy Newcastle are and the Premier League team need to be prepared for that inflation.

But if Newcastle – who spotted the player last month – are as “persistent” and determined to sign Inacio as the reports show, they will pay whatever it takes.

Having weathered relegation this season, next season is tremendous for the Magpies and they are expected to continue.

The quicker they get their business done this summer, the better.
