Plurality blames Biden’s economic policies for rising gas prices

Multitudes of Americans blame soaring gas prices on President Biden’s economic policies, despite his attempts to distract and blame others, a Quinnipiac University poll released this week found.

“Which of the following do you think is most responsible for the recent rise in gas prices: oil companies are charging higher fees; the war in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia; the economic policies of the Biden administration; or the surge in demand as the coronavirus pandemic eases?” the survey asked.

While Biden blames Russian President Vladimir Putin and oil and gas companies, Americans are not blindly buying his excuses.

A majority, 41 percent, blame the Biden administration’s economic policies directly, compared with 24 percent who attribute it to sanctions for the Ukraine/Russia war and 24 percent who believe it is because Oil companies charge more. Just five percent believe the price hike is due to rising demand as China’s coronavirus pandemic eases.

Opinions are split across party lines, with 82 percent of Republicans saying rising gas prices are due to Biden’s misguided policies. However, only 3 percent of Democrats believe this is the case, blaming the war in Ukraine (41 percent) and oil companies (41 percent) for the rise in prices. While independents remain more divided, 39 percent say rising prices are due to Biden’s policies, followed by Ukraine/Russia (25 percent) and oil companies charging more (23 percent).

Notably, more than a third of Americans say they’ve had to cut back on groceries to pay for gas.

The survey, conducted March 24-28, 2022 among 1,462 US adults, has an error rate of +/- 2.6 percent.

It coincides with a recent Convention of States Action/Trafalgar Group poll that found 58.6 percent said Biden should resign for mishandling US energy production if gas prices rise to $8 a gallon.
