PNG: Australia’s nearest neighbor is rocked by a massive 6.2 magnitude earthquake

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck the province of New Britain in Papua New Guinea.

PNG is Australia’s closest neighbor.

The earthquake hit at 7:24 a.m. (AEDT) at a depth of 57 km, according to Geoscience Australia.

The United States Geological Survey said it happened about 47 km from Kimbe, the capital of New Britain.

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that there is no tsunami risk for Australia.

PNG lies along what is known as the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean, making it prone to earthquakes as shifting tectonic plates push against one another.
