A young police officer accused of molesting a teenage girl with alcohol and vapes in exchange for sex met the alleged victim at a high school while investigating a sexual assault against her, a court has heard.
Matthew Townsend, from Gregory Hills in south-west Sydney, was arrested at around 8pm on Saturday and charged with twice having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old.
The 28-year-old was dressed in prison blue as he stood outside Campbelltown Magistrates’ Court via video link from Parklea Jail on Tuesday while his attorney sought bail on his behalf.
Townsend kept his eyes down as the prosecutor said the case against him was “strong” and that detectives had obtained “electronic evidence”.
“Messages were sent to the victim to arrange a connection and offer alcohol and vapes in exchange for sex,” she said.

Legal Aid Attorney Kristiana Domadyous filed a bail request on Townsend’s behalf after his parents offered a $5,000 bond.
She argued that it was Townsend’s first offense and the case would “take a while to wrap up”.
“He has complied with the investigation and the police,” she told the court. “He was also cooperative in handing over a garment.”
Ms Domadyous said Townsend lives in Gregory Hills with two other police officers but would be willing to stay at his parents’ home in Wollongong if he was granted bail.
She said he was willing to agree to a curfew, would not enter the victim’s suburb or contact her or her friends or the school they attend.
However, the prosecutor said the charges were “serious” and that Townsend was “very likely to be convicted.”
She argued that bail should be denied as he fears he may not appear in court or contact the victim.
“He met her at school when he was investigating a sexual assault against her and then groomed her with steam and alcohol,” the prosecutor said.
“The complainant is very young and impressionable.
“There is a concern that he may contact them and police may not be able to detect this, as he has previously communicated with the victim using encrypted apps, including Snapchat, with time-limited messages.”

She explained there was also concern about further crimes against children as he has a trusted position in the community and “abuses” that trust.
Judge David Degnan agreed with the prosecution and declined bail.
“This is deviant sexual desire and quite frankly an overwhelming case,” he told the court.
“I am not confident in the safety of the community should you be released and there is strong evidence to support this.
“I’m not willing to give you bail.”
Townsend has been fired without pay while his employment status is reviewed.
He was remanded in custody to appear in Campbelltown Magistrates Court on November 30 via video link.
