Police release a picture of a man after an elderly man was “doused with liquid and set on fire” outside the mosque

Police are looking for a suspect who they believe set fire to an elderly pensioner outside a mosque in west London last month.

The Metropolitan Police have released CCTV images of the man allegedly dipping an 82-year-old man in what is believed to be petrol before lighting him with a lighter.

They are also urging anyone who recognizes the suspect to come forward.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. on February 27.

Detectives say the man in question chatted with the victim – for around five minutes – as they both exited the West London Islamic Center on Singapore Road in Ealing before launching the attack.

The man then left the scene of the crime.

Meanwhile, the elderly gentleman was taken to hospital where he was treated for severe burns to his arms and face.

Following this, officers have now urged anyone seeking information or identifying the suspect to contact the police.

Detective Sergeant Steven Constable said: “I know this will be an incredibly shocking incident for the community and we are conducting a full investigation into what happened.

“Understandably, there is great concern locally following this incident and local officials have been conducting daily calm patrols at the mosque.

“We continue to work with the West London Islamic Center who have been very supportive of our investigations and have assisted us in our investigations.

“An important part of that is identifying the man in the picture that we released.”

He urged the public to come forward, saying: “If you recognize this man I would urge you to either contact police directly or, to remain anonymous, contact Crimestoppers.

“I would also urge anyone who witnessed this incident who has not yet spoken to the police to come forward.”

Anyone who recognizes the man or has any further information is urged to call the police on number 101, reference 6422/27FEB.
