Miami Heat’s Jimmy Butler greets Utah Jazz’s Donovan Mitchell after the game at American Airlines Arena.

The Utah Jazz have been very open about the fact that they will be listening to trade proposals for their all-star talent, Donovan Mitchell. They don’t buy Mitchell openly, they listen openly. So far, the names of the Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks have featured the most in possible discussions for the star Utah Guard. However, according to jazz beat author Tony Jones, two other NBA teams came into consideration last week.

“The Knicks and Jazz had a new trade talk last week about potential packages for Mitchell, sources say. There is no connection between the two teams in a deal and no Mitchell trade is imminent for the Jazz, sources said. That Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizard are also among the teams pursuing Mitchell, these sources said. Jones wrote.

The Miami Heat was absent from the considerations. However, an NBA exec believes recent news of trade talks resuming in Utah and New York was an excuse to get more than the Knicks in the running for Donovan Mitchell.

Executive on ‘Smoke Screen’ Mitchell News

In a conversation with Heavy.com Sean Deveneyan Eastern Conference executive shared that Utah may be trying to lure other teams back into the Mitchell negotiations, and that could potentially open a door for the Miami Heat.

“Well what you’ve seen out of Utah in the last week looks like a smokescreen, they’ve gotten into a rut where it looks like the Knicks are the only team that can give them what they want, because Mitchell and the Knicks know it. And the Knicks are willing to give up some of their favorites for him, they’ve got eight of them – they just don’t want to give up ALL. The Jazz calls for all of the New York youngsters plus about six other picks, and that’s too much. So they’ve been leaking things out of Utah like they like what Charlotte has or what Washington can give them. And it’s impossible, these teams don’t have the picks that the Knicks have. It’s been this dance for a few weeks, it’s almost silly. But it’s a smoke screen from Utah. There’s no rush so either side can wait for the other,” the executive told Deveney.

While the Heat’s name wasn’t mentioned, Mitchell is known to want to end up at South Beach, and as Utah tries to find teams to get back into the discussions, maybe that’s the encouragement they need.

Previous proposals from Mitchell to Miami

Previous proposals for this Mitchell-Miami liaison include a deal with Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, Nikola Jovic and draft picks for the jazz star.

  • intense heat Receive G Donovan Mitchell
  • Utah jazz Receive G Tyler Herro, G/F Duncan Robinson, F Nikola Jovic, two unprotected first-round picks (2023 and 2028) and two first-round pick swaps (2027, 2029)

Another proposal involved a three-team deal that could help Mitchell find his way to Miami.

Utah receives: Tyler Herro, Nikola Jovic, Duncan Robinson, Gabe Vincent

First-round picks 2023, 2027 and 2029.

Miami receives: Donovan Mitchell and Udoka Azubuike

Oklahoma City will receive: 2025 first-round pick via Miami (protection removed), 2024 second-round pick (top-50 protected), 2028 and 2029 second-round picks.

Is that enough? Maybe the deal would look different as time went on, but it’s a start.
