It’s official: Republicans are leaving the Commission on Presidential Debates. This is the group of Washington grandees formed in 1987 to set the terms of televised sparring every four years. After months of signaling its intention, the Republican National Committee voted unanimously last week to withdraw.
The usual suspects hype this up as a GOP attack on democracy and the American way. Where’s the fainting couch? The reality is that shutting down the debate commission will only reinstate the presidential campaigns. Debate topics and formats are negotiated between Republican and Democratic candidates.
