Premier League player arrested on suspicion of rape has one charge dropped

A Premier League player arrested on suspicion of rape had one of three charges against him dropped when his bail was extended until early October.

The player, who has not been named, was arrested in Barnet, north London, on July 4 for allegedly raping a woman in her 20s in June.

He was further arrested while in custody for allegedly raping another woman in April and June 2021.

The 29-year-old man denied the allegations. In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said “no further action will be taken” regarding the offense in June 2021.

“On July 4, an allegation of raping a woman in her 20s was reported to the police,” the statement said.

“It was reported that the alleged rape took place in June 2022. On July 4, a 29-year-old man was arrested at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and taken into custody. .

“While in custody, he continues to be arrested on suspicion of two rapes believed to have been committed in April and June 2021 on another woman in her 20s.

“There will be no further action in relation to the offense as of June 2021 but the investigation into the remaining charges is still ongoing.

“The man was originally bailed until a date in August but his bail has since been extended to a date in early October.”

In early July, the player’s Premier League club confirmed that they were not currently taking action against the player.

The club, also unnamed, said in a statement: “We are aware the allegations are currently the subject of police investigation.

“We have confirmed that the player denies the charges and is being released on bail by the police pending the outcome of their investigation. There are no fees set and players are able to fulfill their professional commitments including permitted travel.

“We take our commitments and responsibilities seriously and have followed our protection policies and procedures.

“We will look into this matter closely and will look into it further if the situation changes.”
