Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot has dropped a big hint about Hugo Ekitike’s future after reports suggested Premier League giants Newcastle United have agreed a £26.5million fee in talks with him France blue.
After months of speculation – and a transfer saga that has not only played out in the gossip columns but also in the public eye – the nouveau riche Newcastle finally seems to have made the breakthrough. Light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.
Corresponding The guard, Reims have accepted an offer from Newcastle that is just under £30m. That’s the easy part. The Magpies agreed a fee for the coveted 19-year-old back in January, only Ekitike turned it down over concerns about the sports project at St James’ Park.
However, Newcastle’s remarkable rise from the depths of the relegation zone to the dizzying heights of midfield under Eddie Howe should have largely dispelled those doubts, as new signings Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier prove the club’s newfound ambition and traction.
Will Newcastle United finally sign Hugo Ekitike from Reims?
“Today (the interest) is very concrete. And there is an (offer) on the table that suits us very well. An offer that I think is interesting for the player and it is now up to him to make his choice,” says Caillot.
“From now on, his advisors need to move forward in this situation. And if that hasn’t happened at the time of the speech, that’s because his agents didn’t want to continue with this club just yet.”
Cryptic Caillot was reluctant to name Newcastle, but the Reims president certainly left no one in doubt about the club in question as he continued to press about the next step in Ekitike’s football journey.
“We’re being discreet, but hey… it’s an English club,” adds Caillot with a knowing smile. “So we understand which club we are talking about.
“Let me be clear; Hugo Ekitike will not go for 20 million euros. Today, with everything we can see from his potential, the player’s value must be between 30 and 40 million euros.”
Newcastle’s £26.5m bid falls very slightly to the right side of the line. It’s likely that the deal will also come with plenty of bonuses as Reims are set to benefit from the forward’s departure for many years to come.
Ekitike recorded 11 goals and five assists in 27 games in a terrific breakthrough 2021-22 season.
“In Hugo’s case, he would be wasting his time staying with us,” Caillot said a few months ago. “Hugo will be allowed to go, and he probably will. There wasn’t a big club that didn’t ask for him (in January).”
