repair your crack. Prince Harry and William’s relationship has been on the rocks for some time, but the Duke of Sussex is reportedly hoping to settle things with his older brother once and for all. To that end, a royal expert says Harry already had the idea of hiring an “intermediary” to help set things right with William.
Royal expert and Vanity Fair editor Katie Nicholl shared some updates on Harry and William’s relationship with Entertainment Tonight, telling the site on April 18, 2022 that the royal brothers are far from close at the moment – but Harry is eager to fix things. “Harry, I’m told, might have suggested that they could involve some sort of facilitator in these talks to get things moving,” revealed Nicholl. “It was something he suggested to his father. He’s made it very clear that he wants to clear things up. He wants things to get better.”
Nicholl’s comments came just days after Harry – who has lived in California with his wife Meghan Markle since the couple stepped down from their roles as senior working members of the royal family in 2020 – visited Queen Elizabeth during a pit stop in the UK before he travels for the Invictus Games 2022 in the Netherlands. According to Nicholl, this will not be the last time this year that the Duke of Sussex hopes to visit Her Majesty. The Vanity Fair editor claimed that Harry plans to attend their platinum anniversary celebrations in June – by which time he also hopes some tensions between him and his brother will have eased.
“I understand he wants to be here for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June. I think that this suggestion from a mediator is less likely to be about the relationship with his father because his father is open about wanting to work things out,” explained Nicholl. “I would imagine it has more to do with his brother. I would imagine that this idea of wanting a mediator probably has more to do with him and William. His relationship really is at a crossroads. We have been told for many months that they are not closed at the moment. It was very, very difficult.”
Nicholl went on to reveal that while Harry was in the UK to visit the Queen, he did not meet William or his sister-in-law, Duchess Kate. But their missed reunion apparently had less to do with their chasm and more a matter of timing – according to Nicholl, the Cambridges already had a planned holiday before Harry’s visit was set in stone. “I think maybe people will read into William that he was intentionally not here the same week his brother came over. I personally don’t think it was staged that way on purpose and I think William and Kate have limited vacation time,” Nicholl shared. “They wanted to go skiing with the children over Easter. I think what wasn’t clear was that once Harry’s trip was confirmed and everything went ahead, William would not change his vacation plans to come back or cut short his vacation to see his brother.”
But that doesn’t mean William hasn’t sidelined his brother in the past. According to Nicholl, the Duke of Cambridge deliberately excluded his brother from family gatherings and celebrations due to their ongoing tensions. “When William had a party over here last year to thank those involved with the Diana statue, he didn’t really invite Harry to it,” Nicholl explained, referring to the unveiling of the tribute statue that Harry and William in July 2021 in honor of her late mother, Princess Diana. “He didn’t ask him to come back from the States for this, so I think that’s an indication of how strained and how difficult this relationship is, and that might also be why Harry suggested to his father that they.” could need some mediation in all of this because it’s a sticky relationship here. The ones who are a lot harder to get back on track with are William and Harry.”
For now, however, Harry and William’s relationship isn’t a reflection of the Duke of Sussex’s dealings with other members of the royal family. During his visit to the UK in April 2022, Harry’s travels included a private meeting with himself, Meghan and the Queen, which seemed to be going well – although there are few details as to what they really talked about. “At the meeting with the Queen it was just the Queen, Meghan and Harry and very few details of that meeting have been leaked. I suspect it will remain fairly waterproof. I think the Sussexes really need to prove that they can now be trusted and reconnected with family,” Nicholl shared.
